FALL FROM GRACE

We all bemoan the well-worn House formula to some extent. Two perfectly happy kids launching a rocket. One of them is going to sudden start seizing, right? Oh, they started a fire! One kids will get burned, the other starts running and sudden starts seizing, right? Oh, they lit a hobo on fire. Bazino Bazino, The Kid Whose Hair Is On Fire is going to turn out to be a genius fleeing his own fame or something, right?

This week is further proof that House is on its last leg. Not because its formula has reached pathetic, but because the writers are going nuts with it. Continue reading

House: Two Stories

TWO STORIES

Despite some moments of pure magic tonight, it’s all evened out to a fairly average episode. Now, by average, I mean an average level of entertainment. The delivery and construction was decidedly out of the mold, which was nice. The story itself is typically House-having-feelings, but changing up how a typical story is told is just as good as telling a new story in a typical way. Of course, it’s cool to see an unusual story told in an unusual way, but that tends to be over-egging the narrative pudding. So, uninspired story with well-executed structure gets 4 marks. House: Family Practice

FAMILY PRACTICE

House is one of those shows which we keep watching because it’s familiar, but episode to episode, it needs to justify it’s continued existence. Despite the series’ compulsive resetting of character relationships, that’s the meat of the show and they are making an effort to keep things fresh. Turning Chase into a man-whore was a good call and the developments with Taub have been logical, if less than thrilling. Of course, this season’s big hook has been House and Cuddy finally getting it together. The early episodes of “no, Lisa, House won’t change” were straining to get through. However, now that tension has broken and… whoa, House can change. Continue reading
